Man Dead in Shooting Near Lincoln Memorial

UPDATE 2:45 p.m.: The Washington Post reports that the death is believed to be a suicide.

A man found shot on the National Mall near the Lincoln Memorial Sunday morning has died of his injuries, and MPD is investigating the case, NBC Washington and WTOP report.

It’s not yet clear whether the case is considered a homicide.

Reports NBC Washington:

Authorities received multiple calls reporting a shooting in the area of the Mall shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday.

News4’s Derrick Ward reported seeing a number of police and police vehicles at the intersection of Ohio and Independence Avenues. 23rd Street and Ohio Drive are reportedly closed at this time.

Reports WTOP:

U.S. Park Police officers found the man around 8 a.m. near the intersection of 23rd Street and Ohio Drive after hearing reports of a shooting in the area.

The investigation has closed Ohio Drive from the Tidal Basin to 23rd Street.
