First-Degree Murder Charge Dropped in Case Against Dion Redwood

Dion Redwood was released from jail Thursday after a charge of first-degree murder against him was dismissed at a prosecutor’s request.

U.S. Assistant Attorney Michael Liebman said the investigation into the shooting death of 16-year-old Darius Cannon is ongoing. He did not say why the murder charge was dropped.

Redwood was arrested in January on suspicion of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Cannon in April 2013.

Police found Cannon laying on a sidewalk unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to a local hospital and was pronounced dead.

An eye witness was in a parking lot some 25 to 30 feet away and heard two gunshots, saw Cannon fall to the ground and watched as the shooter ran away from the scene, according to documents. The witness gave police a detailed description of the shooter, including his clothing, approximate height, build, complexion and hair-cut.
