Probable Cause Found in Case Against Carlton Hammond

A judge found probable cause Monday to hold Carlton Hammond for the stabbing death of Kenneth Young Jr.

On October 3 around 5:30 p.m., police found Young on the 3400 block of 14th Street, Northwest suffering from four stab wounds to his upper chest, charging documents state. Young died in a local hospital less than one hour later.

Hammond was arrested three weeks later on suspicion of second-degree murder while armed in connection with Young's death.

Police obtained surveillance video from the scene of the murder. According to charging documents, the video shows a physical altercation between the two men before Hammond swings at Young. Footage from a second camera shows Hammond chasing Young, who appears to be wounded, according to court documents.

Police spoke with three separate witnesses, all of whom identified Hammond in photographs. One of the witnesses was shown a still photograph from the video footage that was taken immediately before the stabbing. The photo depicted a group of people standing in front of a residence on the 3400 block of 14th Street.

Documents say that man the witness identified as Hammond was the same person attacking Young moments later.

"You got the right person. Please do your job," another witness told police after identifying Hammond in a photograph.

Hammond is scheduled for a felony status conference before Judge Canon on January 6 at 9:30 a.m.

Carlton Hammond was held last Friday on suspicion of second-degree murder while armed in connection with the stabbing death of Kenneth Young Jr. on October 3. He was arrested earlier that day.

Police found Young in the 3400 block of 14th Street Northwest suffering from multiple stab wounds to the upper right chest. He died at a local hospital. According to a medical examiner, Young was stabbed in the chest, twice in his left arm, shoulder and left forearm.

Charging documents say surveillance video shows Hammond, Young and a group of individuals hanging out in front of a white house.

In the video, a fight breaks out between Hammond and Young on the sidewalk and then moves into the street. Hammond is seen swinging his arm at Young, and Young appears to be hurt, according to documents. Young and Hammond then run in opposite directions from the area. Young later collapses on 14th Street.

A witness told police that while talking with its neighborhood friends, Young walked up and joined the group, when all of a sudden Young and Hammond began tussling, documents say.

The witness told police that it hadn't seen any weapons prior to the fight, but it heard Young cry out "ahhhh," and clutch his chest with his hands, and it saw blood on Young's chest.

Another witness told police that it saw the group and saw Young "running for his life," according to documents. It said that after learning Young was injured, it ran up the street to where Young had fallen and stayed with him. The witness identified Hammond in a photo and in video footage provided by police, documents say.

Police found no weapons on Young, in the surrounding area, or where the struggle took place, documents say.

Hammond is scheduled for a preliminary hearing November 14 at 9:30 a.m. before Judge Russell F. Canan.
