WaPo: Teen Confessed to Shooting Bryant Morillo

One of the two teenagers arrested in the shooting death of 16-year-old Bryant Morillo confessed to the crime shortly after being arrested, the Washington Post reports.

The teens wanted to rob two others who were walking in the 4500 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW about 1:30 p.m., Clingerman said. When it was over, according to Clingerman, Bryant Morillo, 16, of Hyattsville was shot in the neck and buttocks. He died from his injuries. Another person who was with Morillo was also shot but survived.

The suspects took an iPod, some money and a gift bag stuffed with dirty clothes, according to Clingerman.

A witness later told police that the suspects admitted to “shooting some amigos,” Clingerman said. The victims were Latino.

The two suspects, now 17 years old, have not been named publicly.

Two Juveniles Arrested in Connection with Jan. 2011 Shooting Death of Bryant Morillo

Two juveniles were arrested today on suspicion of first-degree murder while armed in connection with the January 2011 shooting death of 16-year-old Bryant Morillo, MPD announced Monday evening.

The juveniles were not identified in MPD's press release.

Arrests Made in a 2011 Homicide in the 4500 Block
Of New Hampshire Avenue, NW

(Washington, DC)-Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Departments Homicide Branch have announced that arrests have been made in the 2011 fatal shooting of Bryant Morillo that occurred in the 4500 block of New Hampshire, Avenue, NW.

On Sunday, January 2, 2011, at approximately 1:30 pm, units from the Fourth District responded to the 4500 block of New Hampshire Avenue, NW for the report of a shooting. Upon their arrival on the scene, they located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Both subjects were transported to a local hospital where one of the victims succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The decedent is identified as 16 year-old Bryant Morillo of Hyattsville, MD.

On Monday, April 16, 2012, two juveniles were arrested by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force and charged with First Degree Murder while Armed.

Metro Police have released the following information in the shooting death of Bryant Morillo:

January 3, 2011

HOMICIDE: 4500 Block of New Hampshire Avenue, NW

(Washington, DC)-Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a fatal shooting which occurred in the 4500 block of New Hampshire Avenue, NW.

On Sunday, January 2, 2011, at approximately 1:30 pm, units from the Fourth District responded to the 4500 block of New Hampshire Avenue, NW for the report of a shooting. Upon their arrival on the scene, they located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Both subjects were transported to a local hospital where one of the victims succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The decedent is identified as 16 year-old Bryant Morillo of Hyattsville, MD.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIME (1-888-919-2746).

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons wanted for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia.

Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to D.C. CRIME SOLVERS at 1-866-411-TIPS and to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411. If the information provided by the caller to the Crime Solvers Unit leads to an arrest and indictment, that caller will be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

Neighbors living in a normally quiet section of Petworth say they were just settling in for an afternoon of football when they heard a commotion coming from a nearby bus stop. There was yelling and then gunfire. D.C Police say two teenagers were waiting for the bus when two robbers approached and announced a stick-up. They took an iPod, two earrings and at least one bag containing clothes. But police say one of the robbers became enraged and demanded his partner shoot the teens. When he refused, the first robber grabbed the gun and opened fire, killing 16-year-old Bryant Morillo of Hyattsville, Md. Morillo's 17-year-old cousin was wounded.

As of early this week, the homicide division of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) was still investigating the fatal shooting 16-year-old Bryant Morillo, which occurred Jan. 2 in the 4500 block of New Hampshire, N.W. Morillo lived in Hyattsville, Md.

Morillo was reportedly a junior at High Point High School in Beltsville, but he was in the District to catch a bus to the His and Hers Salon in Hyattsville, where his mother worked. Morillo's 17-year-old cousin was also wounded in the shooting, one of two incidents which wounded several in D.C. on Sunday.

UPDATE 5:30 p.m.: ABC7 and NBC Washington are identifying the teen as 16-year-old Bryant Morillo.

A teenage boy shot Sunday morning in Northwest D.C. has died of his injuries, according to information on Metro PD's Fourth District listserve. The teen, believed to be 16 or 17 years old, is D.C.'s first homicide victim of the year.

A second teen shot in the same incident remains in stable condition, police said.

A lookout was broadcast after the shooting for two men described by police as "black males, one heavy set wearing a tan jacket, the other has a slim build wearing a blue and grey jacket last seen fleeing south on 4th Street, NW"

The Washington Post said Police Chief Cathy Lanier was at the scene of the shooting Sunday morning immediately following the swearing in of D.C.'s new mayor, Vincent Gray.

Lanier said the motive for the shooting was unclear. "This neighborhood is very quiet, it's been quiet for many years," she told reporters as residents watched from their stoops.

Charles Thorpe, 21, said he was less than a block from the stop for the 64 bus when he heard gunfire and saw two young men fall backward and hit the ground.

Thorpe said he was shaken by what he saw. "Stuff like that doesn't happen here," he said.
