11 Years for "Heat of Passion" Killing

Damien Pannell was sentenced today to 11 years in prison for killing 46-year-old Glenn Bailey in a parking lot fight last May.

The death, Pannell told Judge Thomas Motley when pleading guilty, was unintentional.

“He was trying to hurt someone that I loved and I kinda just lost it,” Pannell told Motley when entering his plea. “I didn’t really have time to think and realize what I was doing.”

According to court documents, Bailey was in a fight with a woman in a Northeast DC parking lot. Pannell broke into the fight and stabbed Bailey at least four times, breaking one of his ribs and puncturing his lung.

On Wednesday Motley said that the crime appeared to have taken place in the heat of passion and with sufficient provocation to merit the plea of voluntary manslaughter while armed and a sentence of 11 years in prison.

Bailey's family attending the sentencing and asked Motley simply that Pannell's sentence be serious enough to prevent similar crimes from occurring in the future.

"Had [Pannell's] anger passed, we wouldn't be here today under those circumstances," Bailey's cousin said. "There's never justification for the taking of a human life. It's stepping beyond human boundaries and acting like God."

Bailey's cousin said that Bailey, though he had gotten into trouble as a youth, had turned his life around and was a respected member of the Edgewood community where he coached youth and ran errands for seniors.

"We were proud of the person that he had become," the cousin said.

Pannell's words at sentencing were simple. "I apologize for my actions," he said. "I didn't mean for it to go the way it went."

"Guilty" Plea in Death of Glenn Bailey

Damien Pannell pleaded guilty this afternoon to voluntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of Glenn Bailey, a man who Pannell said was fighting with a woman he loved.

Pannel was arrested May 18 on suspicion of second degree murder. Charging documents alleged that the day before his arrest, Pannell stabbed Bailey at least four times, breaking one of his ribs and puncturing his lung. The documents stated that Bailey had been in a fight with a woman in a Northeast DC parking lot and that Pannell broke into the fight to stab Bailey.

Pannell, 30, is due to be sentenced on Jan. 11, 2012.

Damien Pannell was ordered held today on suspicion of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of Glenn Bailey in an Edgewood parking lot.

Bailey, a 46-year-old man, was stabbed four times in a mid-Tuesday afternoon fight.

Prosecutors believe that Bailey and a woman were fighting in the parking lot after the woman got mad at Bailey for jumping in front of other customers in line at a liquor store. The two threw punches at each other before Pannell pushed the woman, his girlfriend, aside and stabbed Bailey.

At a preliminary hearing Friday afternoon, Pannell's defense attorney, Madalyn Harvey, told Judge Thomas Motley Pannell could have had good reason to get involved in the fight.

"This is a young man going to the defense of his girlfriend who was being punched by a man larger than her," Harvey said.

Still, Motley ruled that probable cause that Pannell is responsible for second-degree murder exists and ordered that he be held at least until a status hearing in the case on Nov. 8.

Glenn Bailey Killed in Parking Lot Fight

In a northeast DC parking lot on Tuesday, prosecutors believe Glenn Bailey, in the heat of an argument, told a woman to "get her boyfriend."

She said she could "do it herself," and the two exchanged blows in the Edgewood parking lot. Bailey was killed when a man pushed the woman aside, and stabbed Bailey at least four times, breaking one of his ribs and puncturing his lung, according to charging documents in the case.

Bailey died less than a half hour later.

Two witnesses identified Damien Pannell, a 30-year-old man who has no fixed address according to MPD, as the man responsible for the stabbing. A third witness, who did not know any of the people involved in the fight, did not pick Pannell out of a photo lineup.

Pannell, whose name is spelled in jail records as "Pannel," is due in court June 24 for a preliminary hearing.

MPD's Fifth District Commander Andy Solberg said today that Glenn M. Bailey's stabbing death this week was "not a random event."

Damien Pannell was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder in the case Wednesday morning. He was presented with the charge Thursday and is expected in court June 24.

A homeless 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing death of Glenn M. Bailey, MPD announced this evening.

Damien Pannell was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder Wednesday morning, according to MPD's release.

Bailey was killed Tuesday afternoon. Court records show Pannell has not yet been presented with the charge.

Arrest Made in the Homicide on 7th & Edgewood Streets, Northeast

(Washington, DC)-Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch have announced an arrest has been made in the homicide of Glenn M. Bailey.

On Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at approximately 3:38 pm, units from the Fifth District were dispatched to the 600 block of Edgewood Street, NE for the report of an unconscious person. Upon their arrival, they located an adult male victim in the area of 7th and Edgewood Streets, NE who was unconscious, unresponsive, and suffering from apparent stab wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel transported the victim to a local hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

The decedent is identified as 46 year-old Glenn M. Bailey of Northeast, Washington, DC.

On Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at approximately 11:00 am, 30-year-old Damien Pannell, of no fixed address, was arrested in the 600 block of Edgewood Street, NE by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Taskforce and charged him with Second Degree Murder.

Man Fatally Stabbed in Northeast

Glenn M. Bailey, 46, of Northeast, D.C., was fatally stabbed yesterday in the area of 7th and Edgewood Streets NE, according to several reports.

Police responding to a call arrived in the area at 3:40 p.m. and found Bailey breathing, but unconscious, unresponsive and bleeding profusely, according the Washington Post, the Washington Times and WUSA. He was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Washington Post said police are searching for two men and a woman who were involved in an argument at an apartment complex on Edgewood Street.
