Jibril Abdul-Muwwakil Indicted in Stabbing Death of Teen

Jibril Abdul-Muwwakil, 24, pleaded innocent Thursday to second-degree murder while armed in connection with the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Jonathon Adams on February 27.

At a preliminary hearing in March, prosecutors argued that at the time of the murder, Abdul-Muwwakil was suppose to be seeking mental health treatment while on release for a simple assault charge.

Police found Adams stabbed 11 times in the 4300 block of Halley Terrace Southeast. He was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Witnesses told police that Abdul-Muwwakil is schizophrenic and bipolar but alleged that Adams may have been the aggressor, documents say. One witness said Adams told it he didn't care if Abdul-Muwwakil was mentally ill, he was going to "get him" again.

According to documents, Muwwakil's uncle, who lives with Muwwakil, told police that there was a knock at the door that day and Muwwakil went into the hallway. He returned minutes later with blood on his hands and a cell phone that wasn't his, according to the uncle.

Arrest documents describe a trail of blood from where Adams collapsed to inside the building's second floor, outside the apartment that Abdul-Muwwakil shared with his uncle. The uncle told police he asked his nephew about the blood, but Muwwakil didn't say anything. He instead went into the bathroom to clean up and left the apartment for the rest of the day, documents say.

Abdul-Muwwakil is scheduled for a status hearing on Dec. 12 at 9:30 a.m. before Judge Jennifer Anderson.

Probable Cause Found Against Jibril Abdul-Muwwakil in the Death of Jonathon Adams

Jibril Abdul-Muwwakil, a 24-year-old DC man with a history of mental illness, was ordered held on suspicion of second-degree murder Wednesday.

He is suspected in connection with the stabbing death of 17-year-old Jonathon Adams.

At a preliminary hearing Wednesday, Judge Jennifer Anderson ruled Abdul-Muwwakil was a danger to the community based on his criminal history and mental health status. Prosecutors told the judge that at the time of the murder, Abdul-Muwwakil was on release for a simple assault charge and was supposed to be seeking mental health treatment. Prosecutors said Abdul-Muwwakil was found using K2, a synthetic form of cannabis, and failed several drug tests.

Arrest documents indicate that witnesses told police that Abdul-Muwwakil is schizophrenic and bipolar, but also allege that Adams may have gone after Abdul-Muwwakil. Detectives say Adams told a witness that he didn’t care if Muwwakil was “retarded,” he was going to “get him” again.

Defense attorney Maneka Sinha argued Wednesday that Abdul-Muwwakil has no prior convictions of this scale and asked the court release Abdul-Muwwakil with an ankle monitor or to a halfway house.

“The evidence is largely circumstantial, there is no forensic evidence that connects Abdul,” added Sinha in Abdul-Muwwakil's defense. She told the court that none of the three witnesses in the affidavit actually saw the stabbing.

Abdul-Muwwakil's uncle told police he saw Abdul-Muwwakil's hands covered in blood and holding an Android phone was not his that evening, documents say. According to the documents, Abdul-Muwwakil did not say anything to his uncle when asked about the blood, went into the bathroom, washed his hands and left the apartment for the rest of the day. The uncle also told police that Abdul-Muwwakil would sometimes carry knives and a screwdriver with him.

A status hearing in this case is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on June 6.

Witnesses Describe Suspect in Death of Teen as Schizophrenic and Bipolar

A D.C. teen killed last week had his cell phone stolen and was stabbed 11 times in the head, neck and back outside of an apartment building in Southeast D.C.

That's according to court documents charging Jibril Abdul-Muwwakil with second-degree murder. Abdul-Muwwakil was presented with the charge Saturday and remains held pending a preliminary hearing in the case, scheduled for March 26.

He's suspected in the February 27 stabbing death of Jonathon Adams in the 4300 block of Halley Terrace Southeast.

Charging documents say that a family member told police that Muwwakil suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Another witness described him as being mentally challenged, documents say.

Court records do not indicate that any medical alert has been filed for him with the court.

Charging documents in the case state that a witness told police that on February 27, Adams was walking with a mask over his face towards the apartment building where Muwwakil lived.

That witness asked Adams why he kept messing with Muwwakil. According to the witness, Adams said that he didn't care if Muwwakil was "retarded" he was going to "get him" again.

Later, the witness returned to the apartment building and saw Adams bleeding on the sidewalk.

A family member who lives with Muwwakil told police that Muwwakil answered a knock at the apartment door that day and went out into the hallway. Muwwakil returned shortly after with blood on his hands and a cell phone that wasn’t his, according to the witness.

Muwwakil didn’t tell the witness what had happened, and instead went into the bathroom and then left the apartment.

Update: This post has been updated to reflect the identities of the victims.

Six people have been reported killed in the past 36 hours in Washington, DC.

On Thursday at about 5 p.m., 17-year-old Jonathon Adams was found stabbed in the 4300 block of Halley Terrace, Southeast. He was taken to a local hospital where he died. On Friday, Jibril Abdul-Muwwakil was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder while armed in connection with the case.
Less than four hours later, at 8:30 p.m., Tykia Dickerson was found shot in the 3600 block of Jay Street, Northeast.
Friday evening, two men were fatally shot outside a church in Northeast DC, about a mile and a half from where Dickerson was killed. The victims have been identified as brothers Khalid Jamal Bryant, 34, and Jason Emmanuel Bryant, 26.
At about 3 a.m. Saturday, a man was found fatally shot in the 4800 block of 9th St Northwest. The victim has been identified as 51-year-old Billy Andre Harris of Northwest DC.
Police found 46-year-old Andre McIntyre of Northwest DC suffering from head trauma just after midnight Saturday morning. He died at a local hospital.

These deaths bring the 2014 homicide count to 24. In the same period last year 12 people were killed.

Five of those killed this year have been women, representing about 22 percent of all the homicides. Last year, less than 11 percent of the victims were female.

Six of the victims have been under the age of twenty, five of them teenagers. A total of seven teens were killed last year.

Seven 2014 homicides have been closed by arrest.

Man Killed in Early Morning NW DC Shooting; Fifth Homicide in 36 Hours

A man died after being shot early Saturday morning in Northwest DC, the fifth homicide in less than 36 hours in the District.

A message on the Fourth District listserv from Commander Kimberly Chisley-Missouri states:

Around 3am, units received a call for a shooting in the 4800 blk of 9th St NW. Upon arrival an adult male was located suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He has been pronounced. Members of the Homicide Branch are investigating this case. Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.

Homicide: 4800 Block of 9th Street, Northwest

(Washington, DC) – Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide which occurred in the 4800 block of 9th Street, Northwest.

On Saturday, March 1, 2014, at approximately 3:00 am, police officers from the Fourth District received a call for a shooting at 9th and Decatur Street, Northwest. Upon arrival, they located an adult male suffering from apparent gunshot wound in the 4800 block of 9th Street, Northwest. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The decedent was subsequently transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where an autopsy will be performed to determine cause and manner of death.

The decedent has been identified as 51-year-old Billy Andre Harris of Northwest, Washington, DC.

(Washington, DC) – Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch have announced that an arrest has been made in the homicide which occurred in the 4300 block of Halley Terrace, SE.

On Thursday, February 27, 2014, at approximately 5:14 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to a call for the report of a man down in the 4300 block of Halley Terrace, SE. Upon arrival, they located a juvenile male suffering from an apparent stab wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived on the scene and transported him to a local hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The decedent is identified as 17 year-old Jonathon Adams of Southwest, Washington, DC.

On Friday, February 28, 2014, at approximately 3:18 pm, 24 year-old Mr. Jibril Abdul-Muwwakil of Southeast, Washington DC, was arrested by members of the Homicide Branch and charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed in the stabbing death of Jonathon Adams.

On Thursday, 17-year-old Jonathon Adams became the first homicide victim under the age of 18 to be killed this year in DC.

Adams was stabbed Thursday in the 4300 block of Halley Terrace, Southeast. He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

WJLA reported that the incident happened a few blocks from Ballou High School. There are reports that the victim could be a Ballou student.

A man and a woman who died Thursday night in two separate homicides have been identified by police.

At approximately 5:14 p.m., police found 17-year-old Jonathon Adams stabbed in the 4300 block of Halley Terrace, Southeast. Adams was taken to a local hospital for treatment where died from his injuries.

Tykia Dickerson, 19, was found lying on the sidewalk, shot, in the 3600 block of Jay Street, Northeast at approximately 8:34 p.m. She was transported to a local hospital, where she later died of her injuries.

A teenager was killed in Southeast DC near Ballou High School Thursday evening, according to media reports.

Reports WUSA:

Police tell us that a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed in the 4300 block of Halley Terrace SE. Officer found the teen outside when they responded to a report of a man down at approximately 5 p.m.
