Arrests Made in two 2009 Homicide Cases

Metro Police announced arrests in two homicide cases from 2009 yesterday; 36-year-old Lamar Smith and 18-year-old Hiawatha Henry. Both men are charged with first degree murder.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of killing 40-year-old Joseph Barton on Feb. 6, 2009 in the 1300 block of Fort Stevens Drive in Northwest D.C. Barton was shot to death.

Henry was arrested on suspicion of killing his seven-week-old son, Hiawatha Jackson. Jackson was found unresponsive on August 29, 2009 and was taken to a local hospital where he was declared dead. An autopsy concluded that the death was a homicide.

Arrest Made in the Homicide Hiawatha Jackson ( Washington, DC)

Detectives assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announced today that an arrest has been made in the 2009 homicide of 7-week-old Hiawatha Jackson.

On Monday, August 29, 2009, at approximately 3:35 pm, units from the Fifth District responded to 1800 block of Bryant Street, NE for the report of an unconscious person. Upon arrival, they located 7-week-old Hiawatha Jackson in an unconscious state. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported Hiawatha Jackson to a local area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed and his death was ruled a homicide.

On Monday, December 27, 2010, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested the father of Hiawatha Jackson, 18-year-old Hiawatha Henry, of Northeast, DC, pursuant to an arrest warrant charging him with Felony First Degree Murder.

ARREST MADE IN HOMICIDE IN THE 1300 BLOCK OF FORT STEVENS DRIVENW

(Washington, DC) Detectives assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announced today that an arrest has been made in the 2009 homicide of 40-year-old Joseph Barton.

On Friday, February 6, 2009, at approximately 12:30 pm, units from the Fourth District responded to 1300 block of Fort Stevens Drive, NW for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they located 40-year-old Joseph Barton of the 1300 block of Fort Stevens Drive, NW, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported Mr. Barton to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On Monday, December 27, 2010, at approximately 8:30 am, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 36-year-old Lamar Smith of Lorton, Va., pursuant to an arrest warrant charging him with Murder One while Armed.
