Infant Death Investigation Press Conference this Morning

MPD said this morning that a press conference is planned at the homicide branch today to discuss an infant death investigation.

WJLA reported earlier today that an infant girl, possibly a newborn, died early Monday morning after being found abandoned in Northeast DC. She was found in the 3000 block of Channing Street NE after police received an anonymous phone call about the girl.

WUSA reported that the girl was found by a neighbor on the steps of a nearby house.

Reported WTOP:

Ian Milne says a neighbor banged on his door after finding the baby half-uncovered, wrapped only in a towel.

He says the baby’s hair was matted to its skull and it appeared to be newborn.

Even a knock on the door and then somebody could take care of it,” Milne says. “It was freezing last night.”

It was Stubbs’ friend who found the baby as he was walking back from the neighborhood store.

The infant was in cardiac arrest when she was rushed to Children’s Hospital, where she died early Monday, according to Metropolitan Police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump.

Reported Fox5:

Emmanuel Dugger told FOX 5’s Wisdom Martin that he spotted something that looked like a doll, wrapped up in a towel, near the steps of a house.

Once we knew it was a baby, we wrapped it and walked back into the house,” said Dugger, who then called 911.

Reported the Washington Post:

No cause of death has been determined, and police are investigating. Temperatures at Reagan National Airport dipped below freezing between 9 and 10 p.m. on Sunday night, and at the time the baby was found before midnight, temperatures were hovering at about 28 degrees, according to National Weather Service records.
