A 17-year-old shot in Georgetown on Halloween has died of his injuries, WJLA, NBC Washington and Fox5 report.
The teen, identified as Tyrone Garner, was shot in the 2800 block of M Street NW shortly before 11 p.m. on Halloween. He was one of six people shot that night, but the only one known, at this point, to have died.
The Washington Times reported last week that Garner was a ward of DYRS.
D.C. Superior Court Judge Milton C. Lee Jr. had recommended that Tyrone be placed at a secure residential treatment center in Pennsylvania that specializes in hard-to-place juvenile populations, said DYRS sources who were not authorized to talk on the record.
But DYRS Director Neil A. Stanley placed him at New Beginnings, the District’s detention and rehabilitation center in Laurel, apparently angering the judge who on Sept. 30 vacated the youth’s commitment and placed him on probation with Court Social Services, the sources said.
The terms of his probation are unclear, though sources said he was residing with his mother at the time of the shooting incident

Witnesses told ABC7 that the incident started when two groups of teens started fighting near the corner of 28th and N streets Northwest in the midst of Halloween celebrations.
A witness then says three shots rang out and people scattered.
The Washington Post reported that the shooting happened when
Groups of young people were walking in opposite directions on M Street near 28th Street, and when they met, members of one group began bragging about their neighborhood. That sparked responses and, eventually, violence, the sources said.
Georgetown Patch reported that MPD and the US Attorney’s Office participated in an ANC meeting where the shooting was discussed.
Capt. Jeffrey Herold of the Metropolitan Police Department said police officers were stationed on nearly every corner in Georgetown on Halloween. Unrelated to the shooting, three robbery arrests were made and three firearms, including a sawed-off shotgun, were recovered for people throughout the course of the evening.
Herold, who has helped patrol the Georgetown area for the past 22 Halloweens, said other areas of the city were completely dead on Monday night. “It was a little bit more dramatic (in Georgetown) than any other Halloween I’ve seen,” he said.
U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen, who participated in a community dialogue at the meeting, said gang activity is not suspected at this point. When the police conclude their investigation, Machen said he anticipates prosecuting the crime severely, even if the suspected shooter is a teenager.
“If you commit an adult crime, you’re going to do adult time,” Machen said.
