Man Shot in SE DC in July Dies; MPD Rules the Case a Homicide

A man shot in July has died of his injuries and his death has been ruled a homicide.

MPD identified the man as 43 year-old Pernell Lonnie Dawkins of Southeast, Washington, DC. In a press release MPD said Dawkins was shot in the 300 block of Ridge Road, SE at about 2:30 a.m. on July 17. He succumbed to his injuries on March 14.

Homicide: 300 Block of Ridge Road, Southeast

(Washington, DC)-Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a fatal shooting which occurred in the 300 block of Ridge Road, SE.

On Sunday, July 17, 2011, at approximately 2:31 am, units from the Sixth District responded to the 300 block of Ridge Road, SE for the report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel transported the victim to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition. He was paralyzed as a result of the shooting. He was subsequently transferred to a rehabilitation center in Maryland, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Wednesday, March 14, 2012.

The decedent’s remains were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. On Monday, May 14, 2012 the case was ruled a homicide by gunshot.

The decedent has been identified as 43 year-old Pernell Lonnie Dawkins of Southeast, Washington, DC.

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons wanted for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
