Ronald G. Pickett was sentenced to almost 11 years in prison last month, after pleading guilty to the shooting death of his girlfriend, Vanessa McGee.
Pickett plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed in the case in June. McGee was shot and killed in March 2011.
According to documents filed by the government and signed by Pickett, Pickett and McGee attended a night club on the evening of March 4, 2011 with another person. At approximately 2:15 a.m. on March 5, Pickett dropped that person off at her home. Pickett and McGee began arguing on their way home, according to the government’s evidence.
According to that same evidence, after arriving at their home around 2:30 a.m., Pickett decided to leave and he retrieved his 9mm pistol from the bedroom. As Pickett and McGee continued to argue, McGee slipped on the floor and fell into Pickett which caused the gun to fire and strike McGee in the top of the right shoulder, the government said. She died as a result of her injuries.
