George Booth was arraigned Thursday on a charge of first-degree felony murder while armed in connection with the May 1992 shooting death of 27-year-old Chet Matthews.
Booth, one of two suspects in the case, pleaded innocent and remains held pending a detention hearing on December 12.
Police found Matthews shot shortly before midnight on May 25, 1992 near the 14th Street bridge and the I-395 northbound express lane.
The case remained open for 21 years until Lamont Terry was arrested and charged with first-degree felony murder while armed in connection with Mathews’ death.
Terry pleaded innocent and is due to stand trial in May. Booth was arrested Wednesday after a grand jury issued an original indictment charging him with first-degree felony murder while armed.
According to court documents associated with Terry’s case, witnesses told police that Terry, along with several other men, robbed Matthews at gunpoint the night Matthews was killed.
One witness said the group drove up to Matthews, who sat with an unidentified female in a dark colored Nissan Maxima, documents state.
The witness told police that Terry was holding a double barreled sawed-off shotgun and ordered Matthews and the woman out of the car, forcing the woman to the ground and Matthews to his knee, court documents state. The group then took items from the car, and Terry shot Matthews in the chest; the group then fled, the witness said according to documents.
Booth is scheduled for a detention hearing on December 12 with Judge Robert Morin. A trial date is scheduled in May 2014.
