Man Killed in Wednesday Afternoon Shooting May Have Committed Suicide

A man found dead from gunshot wounds inside a home on the 5600 block of Chillum Place Northeast may have committed suicide, according to MPD.

Police found 57-year-old Jerome Edwin Turner unconscious and unresponsive at 3:41 p.m. after responding to reports of a shooting. While MPD has not yet determined the manner of death, police say there are signs Turner may have taken his own life.

On Thursday, police said the investigation ongoing and a final determination will be made after an autopsy is performed.

Undetermined Death Investigation: 5600 Block of Chillum Place, NE

(Washington, DC)-Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a death which occurred in the 5600 block of Chillum Place, NE.

On Thursday, April 16, 2014, at approximately 3:41 pm, police officers from the Fourth District responded to a call for the report of a shooting inside a residence. Upon their arrival, they located an adult male on the floor, unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded and transported the decedent to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The decedent was subsequently transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia, where an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death.

The decedent has been identified as 57-year-old Jerome Edwin Turner of Northeast, Washington, DC.

While there are indications that this may have been a suicide, the final determination will be made after an autopsy is performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The investigation is continuing.
