I was a police officer in your city. A big white boy from the country. I drove a pickup truck and voted republican every election since I was 18. And Guess what? My heart hurt like hell EVER TIME I saw so many of these people laying face down in the street or had to hear their last words.I worked South East in the seventh district. I am still dealing with all the senseless death and suffering.Read more

Comment of the Day: “I was too scared someone will kill my child”

This Comment of the Day comes from Scared Citizen, who wrote in after two homicides overnight in Southeast DC.

When I was 12 years old my 17 year old brother was killed, shot dead on D.C.streets, this was in 1995, from that day forward I vowed to never have children because I was too scared someone will kill my child…but life goes on & needles to say I’m 30 years old with 3 kids, when I became pregnant I prayed to God that I didn’t have boys because they always seem to get killed, I have two boys..My point is the world is so cold, girl or boy you just might end up dead!! SMH

Comment of the Day: “family is family and he will be missed and loved”

Comment of the Day: “May your parents hearts mend”

This Comment of the Day comes from Reacha O’Neal, who wrote about the shooting death of Antonio Jerome Williams.

This is so sad. While I was celebrating my birthday a family is mourning a death. IDK him but the date of his death is my birthday. ITs sucks to see such young people die in such a harmful way. May God Rest upon your family. May your parents hearts mend and forgive those who took you away so soon. Rest in Peace

Comment of the Day: “They tried to save him.”

This Comment of the Day comes from mscrystalofdc, who wrote about the shooting death of Robert Spencer.

I can’t stop crying!! I was sitting In my window Tuesday night I heard the shoot. I heard a young girl screaming. I ran around the corner and they tried to save him. Even as the ambulance rode pass they still were trying to save him. Another one of our youth cut down in the streets for nonsense. My heart is so weary from this experience..I can only imagine how his family feels. RIP I pray that all the young black men in Eagles Crossing realize that on any given day..That too can be there fate..Plz go to school and leave these streets alone!!PLEASe!!

Comment of The Day: “no one told him to try and be a hero.”

justicefortony” and “JusticeforTyrell” left these Comments of the Day, one in support of Anthony Hatton, a co-defendant in the “21st and Vietnam” murder trial, and one in support of Hatton’s alleged victim 17-year-old Tyrell Fogle.

justicefortony“ wrote:

It’s a shame how the court system allows jury’s to go out and do drugs and think that they have not talked about the case to anyone, it just shows how the government plays with the tax payers dollars prolonging a case that should have been a mistrial last week for Hatton, this just shows you how they choose a jury of his peers, but choose a crack head to judge anybody WHAT A SYSTEMFREE MR.HATTON.

JusticeforTyrell” responded, and wrote:

There is enough evidence against him. He is guilty as charge police saw and caught him trying to excape thru a hole in the fence. The police was on his ass the whole time after he shot Tyrell, got the gun that he drop when he came from behind the bushes. Things happen and when his family wakes up and realize noone put a gun in his hands, no one told him to try and be a hero when he was beefing with Tyrell and friends long before he decide to pull that trigger. Justice will be serve for Tyrell and Mr. Hatton is not the only one on trial in this case.

This Comment of the Day comes from Darryl Grayson who wrote in about Omar Sykes. He writes:

The important thing is that we must all develop a comprehensive solution to this violence and crime in our neighborhoods. Whether a street is named in memory of Omar is not the issue. We must solve this ongoing crisis and epidemic throughout our communities nationwide. If the death of Omar Sykes generates the attention and rallying cry to take action to prevent other deaths, then we should support that effort.Read more

Comment of the Day: “People need to be held accountable for what they did”

This Comment of the Day is from justmadabouttheviolence who wrote in to the photo gallery saying:

Everything should not have to be about black or white, the government building expensive homes or the police. People need to be held accountable for what they did. when detectives come and ask for information ppl turn they back and say i am not a snitch. If you want things to get better and get these dangerous individuals off the street speak out. but please stop blaming other ppl or things. our race is killing each other
