Kevin McDarin Johnson pleaded innocent Thursday to first-degree premeditated murder while armed in the choking death of Detra Martin on February 20.
Police found Martin, 48, late at night in a locked bedroom unconscious and strangled to death.
Before she was killed, charging documents say, Martin and Johnson had a heated confrontation over a loan given to Martin by a male friend.

Kevin Charles was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday for the death of Steven Curtis Moore on December 3, 2011.
In June 2013, just days before trial, Charles pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed and conspiracy to commit a crime of violence.

A judge ordered Jarod Yorkshire held Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree murder and obstruction of justice in connection with the December 2011 shooting death of 19-year-old Derrick Ragland.
Yorkshire, 21, is the second suspect charged for Ragland’s murder. Raymond Faunteroy‘s trial ended with a hung jury in September.

James Byron Davis was stabbed at least 15 times in a fight with his nephew that may have started over a piece of furniture.
Davon Davis, 23, was ordered held Tuesday on suspicion of second-degree murder. He was arrested Monday.

A stabbing Monday night left 53-year-old James Byron Davis dead, MPD announced Tuesday. His nephew, Davon Davis, was arrested on scene.
Police found 53-year-old Davis suffering from multiple stabs wounds in the 5000 block of Just Street Northeast at approximately 9:20 p.m. Monday night. Davis was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
The 23-year-old Davis is suspected of second-degree murder while armed.

A 21-year-old D.C. man has been arrested for the 2011 murder of Derrick Ragland, according to MPD.
Jarod Yorkshire is suspected of first-degree murder and obstruction of justice in connection with Ragland’s death.
Police found 19-year-old Ragland suffering from gunshot wounds in the 1000 block of Taylor Street, Northeast just before 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 19, 2011. He was transported to a local hospital and died shortly after.
A judge declared a mistrial in Raymond Faunteroy’s trial in September for Ragland’s death.

A judge ordered Burnis Cole released on high intensity supervision Tuesday after a bond review hearing. Cole is charged with first-degree murder while armed and related weapons offenses for the January 2013 death of Raasheem Jamal Rich. Cole’s trial is expected to begin January 2015.
Rich, 40, was found suffering from multiple stab wounds in the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue Southeast.
Rich was killed outside of a liquor store after an altercation with Cole , documents say. Read more

A week ago, we announced that we would close this site at the end of December, after covering the District of Columbia for more than four years.
Many of you asked how you could help keep the site going and offered your support. Your comments and emails have been overwhelming and gratifying, and we want to find a way for Homicide Watch D.C. to continue being the resource this community needs.
However, our situation hasn’t changed. We’re still in Boston, and we know that we cannot continue to hire, train and supervise reporters based in D.C. This community needs and deserves local ownership. We want to be clear on this: We believe the money can be raised to support this site’s editorial mission, but Laura and I cannot continue to be the primary owners of the site.
With that in mind, we’ve put together a request for proposals.
This is open to anyone willing to commit to continuing the work of Homicide Watch D.C., to report every murder in the District from crime to conviction.
