This week marked the second consecutive year that D.C. has experienced an Independence Day killing.
Omar Sykes, a 22-year-old Howard University student, was shot in the 700 block of Fairmont Street Northwest around 11:30 p.m. July 4; he later died at the hospital. Police believe his death was the result of an attempted robbery.
