Prosecutors believe that Kevin Walker shot and killed siblings Jamie and Jamahl Jenkins over an argument stemming from an altercation with Walker’s girlfriend in July 2013.
But Walker’s defense argued that Jamie confronted Walker’s girlfriend in a rage and that Jamahl threatened to get his gun after Jamie claimed she had been robbed by the girlfriend’s son.
Jamie, 28, and Jamahl, 21, Jenkins were found at approximately 4:35 a.m. on the 5300 block of East Capitol Street Northeast shot and unconscious. Jamie was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Jamahl was declared dead on the scene.
Walker is charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of possession of a firearm and one count of carrying a pistol without a license.
According to prosecutors, on the night of the murder, a cousin and another person witnessed Jamie and Walker’s girlfriend physically fight and Walker shoot both Jamie and Jamahl.
On November 25, Jamie and Jamahl’s cousin Annette Gibson testified that Jamie came to her house upset and confronted Walker’s girlfriend. She told jurors that Jamahl wasn’t really making threats, just trying to protect his sister.
Gibson told jurors that she just “wanted to tell the truth” and that she saw Walker kill her cousins.
Orlando Turner, who also witnessed the shooting, testified that before Jamie was shot, “she was begging for her brother’s life.”
“Everything just got kind of quiet and then the shooter just raised his hand and shot her,” Turner said. “I seen the first shot. She fell straight to her back.”
As Jamie fell, Jamal turned to his right. Turner was running back into his house when he heard three shots, and then a couple more.
Defense attorneys argued that Turner never saw the shooter, and that the police’s investigation was “sloppy and ineffective.”
During trial, Walker’s attorneys argued that Jamahl Jenkins told Walker’s girlfriend, “I’m going to go home and get my gun and shoot whoever robbed my sister.”
Jury deliberation will continue Friday at 9:30.
