David Allen Shepherd was sentenced to 40 years in prison Friday for the fatal shooting of Henry Charles Miller.
“It is true you were making recent strides to help your family and friends out, but facts show that you have been committing crimes for 30 years,” Judge Russell Canan told Shepherd before delivering the sentence.
“You weren’t out of prison a year before killing Mr. Miller.”

MPD announced Tuesday that an 18-year-old Northwest D.C. man has been arrested in connection with the October 29 stabbing that killed Inoe Javier Salvador.
Edgar Blanco is suspected of first-degree murder, police say.
Salvador, 41, of Gaithersburg, Maryland was found with visible stab wounds in the 1400 Block of Perry Place, Northwest. He died at a local hospital.

Ervin Ingraham and Ronnetta Hurley-Brown were already dead when police found them shortly before 4:00 p.m. on January 30, according to court documents.
Inches from the front door, Ingraham lay face down on the living room floor. In the kitchen, Hurley-Brown was found lying on her back, nude from the waist down. They each sustained a single bullet to the back of the head.
The victims’ 1- and the 2-year-old children, who documents say were unharmed, were alone in the apartment for over 14 hours after their parents were shot execution-style. Read more
Tsihnik Cavallero pleaded innocent Monday to first-degree murder while armed and a weapons violation in the January death of 21-year-old Marcus Minor.
Cavallero was originally charged with second-degree murder while armed, but a grand jury indicted him on the more serious first-degree murder charge.
Charging documents say that Minor and Cavallero both sold marijuana and hung out on Stevens Road Southeast, where the shooting happened. Two witnesses reported seeing Cavallero and Minor arguing moments before the shooting.

Two homicides were reported this week:
- Police found one-month-old Raj’saun Tyrik Brown in the 1700 block of Trenton Place Southeast. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
- Latroia Renee Smith, 26, was found dead at the scene of a fire. A medical examiner found that Smith “sustained gunshot wounds and burns,” ruling her death a homicide.
Francis Lyles pleaded innocent Wednesday to two counts of first-degree felony murder, along with three counts of cruelty to children and obstruction of justice for the June 24 beating death of her 3-year-old son Xavier Lyles.
Marquette Tibbs was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the shooting death of Andre Jackson.
Carlton Maurice Johnson, 22, pleaded innocent to two counts of first-degree murder while armed, along with assault with intent to kill and three gun related charges in the July 2013 double homicide of Anthony Chase and Eric Leeper.
Prosecutors dropped a charge of second-degree murder and other related charges Friday in the case against Daquan Tinker for the shooting death of Terrence Robinson, 48, on Aug. 12, 2012. A jury cleared Tinker of more serious murder charges in a trial in October but couldn’t agree on a verdict on the lesser count. The jury did convict Tinker of armed robbery.
Melvin George pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Friday for the beating death of 46-year-old Jeffrey Coleman in May.
Tyrron Lamont Sweeney, 22, was arrested for the shooting deaths of Ervin Phillip Ingraham and Ronnetta Hurley-Brown in January.
Tyrron Lamont Sweeney, 22, was arrested Friday for the shooting deaths of Ervin Phillip Ingraham and Ronnetta Hurley-Brown in January.
Ingraham and Hurley-Brown, both 21, were found shot to death in a rowhouse in the 1600 block of 17th Street Southeast. At a press conference shortly after, MPD Captain Anthony Haythe said the two were probably “targeted.”
Sweeney was presented with two charges of first-degree murder while armed on Saturday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 21.

Melvin George pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Friday for the beating death of 46-year-old Jeffrey Coleman in May.
Coleman was found unconscious and bleeding from his face in the 2300 block of Pitts Place Southeast. He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors inserted a catheter into his brain, documents say. Coleman, suffering from multiple facial fractures, never regained consciousness.

Prosecutors dropped a charge of second-degree murder and other related charges Friday in the case against Daquan Tinker for the shooting death of Terrence Robinson, 48, on Aug. 12, 2012.
Judge Robert E. Morin declared a mistrial in the case against Tinker, 18, in October, after a jury cleared him of first-degree premeditated murder and felony murder, but convicted him of robbery while armed. Jurors were not able to reach a consensus on remaining charges, including attempted robbery and possession of a firearm. Read more
Carlton Maurice Johnson, 22, pleaded innocent Friday to two counts of first-degree murder while armed, along with assault with intent to kill and three gun related charges in the July 2013 double homicide of Anthony Chase and Eric Leeper.
On July 17, 2013, police found Chase, Leeper and an unidentified person with multiple gunshot wounds in the 300 block of Ridge Road Southeast. Charging documents say Chase, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene. Leeper and a surviving victim were taken to a nearby hospital. Leeper, 27, died the next day on July 18, 2013.
