Marquette Tibbs was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison for the shooting death of Andre Jackson almost exactly two years ago.
Tibbs pleaded guilty in September to voluntary manslaughter while armed for Jackson’s murder. He had originally been charged with first-degree murder.

Francis Lyles pleaded innocent Wednesday to two counts of first-degree felony murder, along with three counts of cruelty to children and obstruction of justice for the June 24 beating death of her 3-year-old son Xavier Lyles.
The toddler was found in the 2500 block of Pomeroy Road Southeast unconscious and unresponsive, with multiple injuries. According to prosecutors, she used so much force that the child sustained a lacerated liver, ruptured kidneys and bleeding around his heart, among other injuries.

A woman found dead early Sunday morning has been ruled a homicide, police announced Monday.
Just before 5 a.m., firefighters responded to a fire on the 2700 block of Langston Place Southeast. Latroia Renee Smith, 26, was found dead at the scene.
A medical examiner found that Smith “sustained gunshot wounds and burns,” police said. The cause of death is undetermined. No suspects have been named.
According to WJLA, Smith was a mother of three.

The death of an infant found unconscious Wednesday has been ruled a homicide, police announced Sunday.
Police found one-month-old Raj’saun Tyrik Brown in the 1700 block of Trenton Place Southeast. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
A medical examiner found that the child “suffered multiple blunt force impact injuries,” police said. No suspects have been named.

Mauda’Rico Proctor pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter last week Friday for the fatal shooting of Dominic Davis on January 14, 2013.
Carlton Hammond was arrested and held last week Friday in connection with the stabbing death of Kenneth Young Jr.
Darious Scales and Todd Green were indicted Wednesday for the fatal shooting of Timothy Delonte Dawkins in August 2013.
Because Dawkins was killed as a result of a gun fight between Scales and Green, the two rivals are charged under the urban warfare theory and will be tried as co-defendants. Scales is charged with second-degree murder while armed, in addition to assault and weapons charges. For the second time, Green is charged with first-degree murder while armed.
A jury acquitted Deangelo Williams of all charges in connection with the February 2011 shooting death of Lucki Pannell. Jurors delivered the verdict Thursday afternoon after two days of deliberations.
Williams was cleared of first-degree premeditated murder and three counts of possession of a firearm. He was also cleared of two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, for allegedly shooting Terry and Bernardo Jimenez in the same incident that killed Pannell.

Carlton Hammond was held last Friday on suspicion of second-degree murder while armed in connection with the stabbing death of Kenneth Young Jr. on October 3. He was arrested earlier that day.
Police found Young in the 3400 block of 14th Street Northwest suffering from multiple stab wounds to the upper right chest. He died at a local hospital. According to a medical examiner, Young was stabbed in the chest, twice in his left arm, shoulder and left forearm.
Charging documents say surveillance video shows Hammond, Young and a group of individuals hanging out in front of a white house. Read more
