Gregory Allen Green, 25, was held without bond Thursday on charges of first-degree murder while armed, felony murder and attempted robbery in connection to the shooting death of Derrick Eugene Williams this past weekend.
Williams, 35, was found last Saturday at approximately 12:23 a.m. lying on the sidewalk of the 1200 block of Eaton Place Southeast, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Green was arrested four days later.
Charging documents say a witness, who has known Green for over ten years as “Face,” said that Green was one of two people standing over Williams moments after three gunshots were heard. According to the documents, the witness saw Green pulling the victim’s legs and going through the victim’s pockets.
The witness told police it observed Green taking what appeared to be money and putting it in his pocket before fleeing the scene. Documents say the witness remembers “Face” running and holding his waist band as if he was carrying a weapon.
Representing Green, attorney Judith Pipe asked the court to release him, noting that “the entire Gerstein relies on one witness.”
Judge Karen Howze ruled he will be held based on prior convictions. Prosecutors say Green was released from custody last September after serving time for charges of cocaine possession with attempt to distribute and robbery.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on April 22 before Judge John Ramsey Johnson.
