A young DC man and his mother were both sentenced today for crimes connected to the fatal beating that killed Carlos Bernard Alexander, a 47-year-old man with a severe heart condition.
Daquan Johnson, who was 18-year-old when he was arrested about two weeks after Alexander died, was sentenced to ten years in prison by Judge Gerald Fisher. Johnson pleaded guilty in May to voluntary manslaughter and robbery in the case.
His mother, who gave the grand jury an untrue alibi about Johnson’s whereabouts the night of the murder and tried to convince other witnesses to lie to the grand jury, too, was sentenced to two years in prison. Her sentence was suspended on the condition that she complete two years of supervised probation. Read more
NPR this weekend reported a story about the death of Catherine Fuller in 1984 and the new information that has prompted a DC Superior Court Judge to schedule a hearing for the case for this fall.
Reports Carrie Johnson for Morning Edition:
In the fall of 1984, in a rain-soaked alley in Washington, D.C., a street vendor found a tiny woman lying dead on the floor of a garage.
She was Catherine Fuller, a mother of six, who left home to run a quick errand and never came back. She had been beaten, sexually assaulted and killed all within sight of a busy public street.
The murder horrified and frightened the city. Over the next few months, police arrested 17 people in connection with the crime.
Now, a review by the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project is exposing doubts about the police investigation — and raising questions about whether one of the young men who was convicted really took part in the attack.
MPD announced this morning that 19-year-old Terrell Patton of Southeast DC was arrested Saturday in connection with a 2009 shooting that killed 20-year-old Deuante Ray.
Patton is the second person arrested in connection with the case. In November a person was arrested and charged with first degree murder while armed in Ray’s death.
NBC Washington reports this weekend on a sad anniversary for the family of John Pernell. On Sunday it will be one year since he was gunned down at a neighborhood cookout in a botched robbery attempt. No suspects have been arrested in the case.
Cederick Shuler was arraigned in DC Superior Court yesterday on two murder charges, one for the 1998 killing of Renee Best and the other for the 1999 killing of Edward Gray.
Prosecutor Amanda Haines said both victims were innocent bystanders and that she expects charges to be filed in a third murder soon.
Fox5’s Paul Wagner reports on Shuler in the video below.
