Links Roundup: Two Dead in SE DC Shooting late Wednesday Night

A shooting in Southeast DC shortly before midnight Tuesday killed two people and injured another, according to media reports.

According to a DC Alert, a lookout was issued for a “black male wearing blue jean shorts, a black t-shirt, with a black t-shirt tied around his head.”

Metropolitan Police officers were in the area when a gunman fired at least a dozen shots in the 300 block of Ridge Road, striking three men around 11:39 p.m. The officers heard the shots and responded to the scene quickly, where they found one of the victims lying dead in the street. The two other victims were transported to a local hospital, one with a gun shot wound to the upper body who later died. Read more

Toll of Early Morning Violence Unclear

Update: MPD has confirmed that just one death has resulted from Saturday morning’s violence; Anthony Sanchez died after being taken to a local hospital with gunshot wounds. MPD press officer Ariz Alali said Saturday afternoon that the victim in the Parkland Place shooting is in grave condition.

NBC Washington has posted that they have “updated” their story from this morning that three people were killed early Saturday morning to report that only one of the three people reported shot died.

Jim Graham: Juvenile Shooting Victim was Ward of DYRS

DC Councilmember Jim Graham reports that a juvenile who died from a gunshot wound early Saturday morning at a local hospital had been shot in Columbia Heights, near Columbia Road and Sherman Avenue.

The young person, Graham said in an listserv message, was Latino and a ward of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services.

NBC Washington reports that three people, including one juvenile, were killed in separate incidents in DC early Saturday morning.

According to NBC Washington, the juvenile was shot just before 2 a.m. He was dropped off at a hospital, NBC Washington reported. The location of where the shooting took place was not immediately available.

D.C. 2012 Murder Rate Ranked 8th Among Nation’s Most Populated Cities

In 2012, Washington D.C. ranked eighth in murders per capita in cities populated with 500,000 or more residents, according to data submitted by cities and released by the FBI earlier this month.

The Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report, a yearly breakdown of crime statistics provided by law enforcement agencies across the country, did not include D.C. crime numbers from 2012.

Spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump said in an email that MPD was unable to provide the FBI preliminary crime statistics from last year because the department was transitioning to a new data entry system. In previous years, MPD has regularly provided crime statistics to the FBI, Crump said.

Photographs of street shrines dedicated to some of this year’s homicide victims have been published by Washington’s Other Monuments.

This memorial for Alvin Allen Jr. is on Stanton Road Southeast. Allen was found gunned down in the 3400 block of Stanton Road SE around 3 a.m. May 5.

Year-to-Date: D.C. on Track to Break 2012 Homicide Milestone

At the current rate, D.C. could end 2013 with fewer homicides than the milestone-breaking 92 that occurred last year.

If the rest of the year plays out identical to 2012, D.C. will end 2013 with 82 homicides, making it the lowest number in over 50 years.

To date, 24 homicides, have been reported, nine fewer than there were at this point in 2012. Ten of those 24 cases have been closed with an arrest.

LeFrankal Williams Foundation Honors Victims Through Free Obituary Service

More than 200 friends and family members packed the Woodlawn Faith United Methodist Church to mourn the loss of 30-year-old Joseph Khiante Hardin earlier this year.

Hardin was shot Feb. 23 outside a nightclub in Northwest D.C. He was survived by his parents and siblings, and two young sons.

The LeFrankal Williams Foundation, an organization that offers free obituaries to families of homicide victims in the District, printed an altar poster, a collage of photographs chronicling Hardin’s life, hundreds of professional programs, and thank you notes for the family to distribute during and after the funeral.

With four core board members and a support base of volunteers and donors, the LeFrankal Foundation has held more than 20 funeral services free of charge.
