A 53-year-old woman was found dead inside a Southwest D.C. residence around 4:15 a.m. Friday, police announced in a press release.
Mary Anne Thomas was unconscious and unresponsive when D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to a call for a welfare check in the 1200 block of Howison Place Southwest. A medical examiner determined that she died of a gunshot wound.

Kevin Darrell Boykins was ordered held Friday on charges of first-degree felony murder while armed in connection with the shooting death of Kevin Lanard James. Boykins, 43, was arrested Thursday.
On January 16, police found James with a gunshot wound to the head seated on the driver’s side of a BMW in the 1500 block of Gallatin Place Northeast. Charging documents say a witness called 911 after the vehicle crashed into a light pole.
Police believe James was killed in his car after a heated exchange via text messages about a debt, court documents state.

A charge of voluntary manslaughter against Corey Stoddard was dismissed Tuesday when Judge Russell Canan granted prosecutors’ request to dismiss the case without prejudice.
Spokesperson William Miller said that the U.S. Attorney’s Office found “insufficient evidence to go forward at this time.”
Stoddard was arrested in January on suspicion of second-degree murder connection with the death of 19-year-old Kevin Lewis Crouch. He was released in March on his personal promise to return to court.
Miller said the US Attorney’s Offices’ investigation into Crouch’s death is ongoing.

The body of a man found at the home of another recent homicide has been identified as Delano Wingfield, of Southeast DC.
Wingfield’s death has been ruled a homicide, MPD said.
No arrests or charges have been announced in connection to the case.

A 43-year-old Maryland man has been arrested in connection with the January shooting death of Kevin Lanard James.
The man, identified by police as Kevin Darrell Boykins of Mount Rainer, is suspected of first-degree felony murder while armed, police say.

A judge found substantial probability Thursday in the case against William Smallwood and Demitrich Jones in connection with the shooting death of Rashard Raigns.
Raigns was found lying face down on a sidewalk in the 1900 block of Fenwick Street Northeast, with a gunshot wound to the torso, on June 4. Ten feet away from Raign’s body, police found a green blanket with an empty laptop case, power cord and other personal belongings scattered nearby.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Veronica Sanchez argued Thursday that Smallwood, 22, and Jones, 16, planned to rob Raigns and video showed the two men covering their faces with shirts before they robbed Raigns.

Joshua Mebane will go forward with an insanity defense, his attorney told a judge in a status hearing today.
He is charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with the shooting death of Quadar Muhammad.
Mebane was sent to St. Elizabeths Hospital for a mental health examination on February 12, but was transferred back to D.C. Jail due to “behavioral issues.” Read more
Metropolitan Police announced Thursday that 3-year-old Xavier Lyles died Tuesday in the 2500 block of Pomeroy Road, Southeast.
Emergency services found Lyles unconscious and unresponsive with no signs consistent with life at approximately 11:07 a.m., according to police. The cause of death was later determined to be multiple blunt force injuries.

Judge Rhonda Winston allowed Michael Marshall to withdraw his plea to second-degree murder Wednesday in connection with the death of Antonio Headspeath. In April, Marshall pleaded guilty to the charge and prosecutors planned to dismiss charges of first-degree premeditated murder while armed and five related gun charges in exchange for his plea.
Headspeath, 25, died on October 17, 2011 from multiple gunshot wounds. Police found him after 1:32 a.m. in the 1100 block of Stevens Road Southeast with no signs consistent with life.
William Miller, spokesperson for the United States Attorneys’ Office, said Wednesday that Marshall will again face the six charges on his indictment.

Under oath, and with his family crying in the courtroom, James Walter Yates III, admitted Wednesday to fatally shooting Andre Pierce Joyner in the head after an argument near Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School this April.
Yates, 29, pleaded guilty in response to a charge of second-degree murder while armed. Joyner, 29, was found by police in the 600 Block of Morris Place, Northeast, unconscious, unresponsive, and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Under the plea agreement, Yates could be sentenced to 12 to 24 years in prison, following guidelines that both defense attorneys and prosecutors agreed on. The maximum sentence for second degree murder is 40 years, but prosecutors are asking for a maximum of 18 years in this case.
