Judge Karen Howze ordered James Johnson held Monday on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Talbert Bright.
Bright, 48, was shot multiple times in the upper body, and died at Washington Hospital Center at 3:05 a.m. Saturday, according to charging documents.
Charging documents allege that Johnson, 30, shot Bright while with friends in a park near 2nd Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW over a can of beer.

A woman who died Friday night after being suffocated in a residence in the 4100 block of Gault Place Northeast has been identified by police, MPD announced Monday.
Barbara Moore, 64, was found at approximately 8:35 p.m. Friday unconscious and unresponsive, with no signs of life. An autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Sunday that Moore died from asphyxia by compression.
Moore’s death is the fifth reported homicide that has occurred in the past four days. She is the eleventh woman to die in a homicide during 2014.

A shooting in the 1900 block of H Street Northeast killed 23-year-old Darryl Delonta Jacobs early Monday morning, according to MPD.
Police officers responding to a call for a shooting at approximately 12:29 a.m. found Jacobs suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Jacobs was then transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A 31-year-old woman found dead early Sunday morning was stabbed multiple times, MPD said Monday.
The woman, identified by police as Eboni Domally, was found at 4:15 a.m. with no signs of life in the 5200 block of Queens Stroll Place Southeast.

A 30-year-old DC man has been arrested in connection with the Saturday shooting death of Talbert Mitchell Bright, MPD said Monday.
The man, identified as James Johnson, is suspected of second-degree murder while armed.
Police found Bright with multiple gunshot wounds near the intersection of 2nd Street and Massachusetts Avenue Northwest at approximately 2:44 a.m. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

MPD reports that an unidentified man was shot and killed early Monday morning in the 1900 block of H Street Northeast. One day earlier, an unidentified woman was found dead in an apartment in the 5200 block of Queens Stroll Place Southeast, according to MPD.
Since last Friday, four people have been killed in D.C.
MPD Public Affairs Specialist Saray Leon said Monday that officers responding to a report of a shooting found the man at 12:29 a.m. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, said Leon.

In the Washington Post this weekend, Tom Jackman wrote about a legal threat to the use of cell phone records to provide evidence to a person’s location.
Cell phone records are often used in court to testify to a defendant— or others— being in the vicinity of a crime.
The location information is determined based on an analysis of the cell phone towers a phone “pings” off of. Generally, a person’s phone, if proved to be with them, can provide evidence of where a person is (but not their exact location).
Reports Jackman:
Cellphone records are often used as evidence, relied upon to trace which cell tower was used to make or receive a call and then determine a caller’s whereabouts. But experts say that using a single tower to precisely locate where someone was at the time of a crime has severe limitations. Read more

Three homicides were reported this week in D.C.:
- Xavier Lyles, 3, died Tuesday in the 2500 block of Pomeroy Road, Southeast after police found him unconscious and unresponsive with no signs consistent with life.
- Talbert Mitchell Bright, 48, died after being found shot near the intersection of 2nd Street and Massachusetts Avenue Northwest early Saturday morning.
- Mary Anne Thomas was found unconscious and unresponsive on Friday morning in the 1200 block of Howison Place Southwest. Police say she died of a gunshot wound.
The body of a man found last Tuesday at 1800 block of 8th Street Northwest has been identified as Delano Wingfield, of Southeast D.C. Wingfield was discovered five days after Leon Young was found dead in the attic of the same house.
Prosecutors dropped a charge of voluntary manslaughter in the case against Corey Stoddard, suspected in the death of Kevin Lewis Crouch. Spokesperson William Miller said that the United States Attorney’s Office did not have sufficient evidence to go forward with Stoddard’s charge, but the investigation is ongoing.
James Walter Yates III pleaded guilty Wednesday to a charge of second-degree murder while armed in connection with the April shooting death of Andre Pierce Joyner. Under the plea agreement, Yates could be sentenced to 12 to 24 years in prison; prosecutors have asked that Yates be sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Michael Marshall withdrew his plea Wednesday to second-degree murder in the death of Antonio Headspeath. Previously, Marshall pleaded guilty and prosecutors planned to dismiss his charges of first-degree premeditated murder while armed and five related gun charges in exchange for his plea.
Joshua Mebane’s attorneys rejected a plea offer and told Judge Jennifer Anderson that they will pursue an insanity defense in his case. Mebane is charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with the shooting death of Quadar Muhammad. His former codefendant Linda Bury pleaded guilty in May 2013 in connection with Muhammad’s death.
Judge Jennifer Anderson ruled there was substantial probability in the case against William Smallwood and Demitrich Jones for the shooting death of Rashard Raigns. Prosecutors argued that Smallwood, 22, and Jones, 16, planned to rob Raigns and video showed the two men covering their faces with shirts before they robbed Raigns.
Kevin Darrell Boykins, 43, was arrested and held in connection with the January shooting death of Kevin Lanard James. Charging documents say that James was killed in his car after a heated exchange with Boykins via text messages about a debt.

Bright was taken to a local hospital where he was declared dead.
